Gulf halal food standard update: shipment certificates for high-risk products

The GCC Standardization Organization released a draft update of its core halal food standard, GSO 2055-1:2026 “Halal Food – Part 1: General Requirements”, on 17 February 2026. It will replace the 2015 edition; public comments closed on 18 April 2026.

Key changes proposed

  • Halal requirements across the whole supply chain, from production to food service
  • Tighter controls on prohibited substances
  • Halal shipment certification for high-risk animal-based products
  • Strict segregation, hygiene and changeover rules between halal and non-halal production

Saudi Arabia already requires a certificate of consignment for every shipment of products that need halal certification. Exporters to the UAE and wider Gulf should expect similar per-shipment paperwork once the updated standard is adopted.
